The campaign, led by a coalition of state-based organizations and supported by the Fairness Project, is the latest to mark this milestone in an election year that is likely to have abortion- and reproductive rights-related ballot measures in more states than ever.
This November’s election is likely to have abortion- and reproductive rights-related ballot measures in more states than ever before. The Fairness Project is working with local coalitions to support these efforts in several of the 23 states that allow citizen-initiated ballot measures.
Kelly Hall, the executive director of The Fairness Project, one of the national groups backing the CI-128 campaign, said the opposition tactics playing out in Montana are “nearly identical” to those happening in other states considering reproductive rights initiatives, such as Arizona and Missouri.
This year, numerous state legislatures have advanced bills to further restrict voters’ agency to pass laws at the ballot box, with some being referred to voters for the 2024 election.
The proposed amendment, SJR74, would have required citizen-initiated ballot measures to pass by a majority of voters statewide as well as a majority of congressional districts — meaning that a minority would be able to veto the will of the majority.
The Fairness Project will lead a panel at this year’s Netroots Nation conference in Baltimore, Maryland, the largest annual convention of progressive leaders and organizers.
Last week, Missourians for Healthy Families and Fair Wages took a significant step forward in their campaign for workers rights, submitting over 210,000 signatures to qualify their ballot measure for the November 2024 ballot.
“This milestone for the Missourians for Constitutional Freedom campaign means that voters are one step closer to being able to use the ballot measure process to secure their rights this November, and we are excited to be standing with them in that fight,” Kelly Hall, executive director of the Fairness Project, said.
