IN FIRST SINCE 2024 ELECTION, MISSOURI RE-ESTABLISHES ABORTION CARE, UPENDING STATE BAN
Missouri State Court Allows Clinics to Re-Establish Abortion Care, Upholding Voter-Initiated Ballot Measure Passed in November
INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI – In a resounding victory for reproductive freedom and a testament to the power of citizen-initiated ballot initiatives, the people of Missouri tonight regained access to abortion care less than 13 months after the launch of an ambitious campaign to end the state’s ban. Judge Jerri Zhang of the 16th Circuit Court tonight removed the last remaining barrier to Missouri clinics to re-establishing abortion care, citing the discriminatory nature of medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion.
In response, the Fairness Project’s Executive Director Kelly Hall issued the following statement:
“Tonight, a Missouri court reaffirmed the decision of the people of Missouri: that abortion is healthcare and extremist politicians have no right to restrict the people’s access to this essential care. This is a decisive win for the people, for reproductive freedom, and for direct democracy.
Just a year after launching a campaign to overturn this heinous ban through the ballot measure process, Missourians now have their rights restored by a court of law. Our partners on the ground are already preparing to assist patients and providers in re-establishing access to abortion care in the state. Thankfully, after a long and litigious process, Missouri residents will have greater access to care than they have had in many years.”
