ABORTION RIGHTS VICTORY IN ARIZONA: Voters Approve Abortion Ballot Measure, Cementing State Constitutional Right to Reproductive Freedom
PHOENIX, AZ – Arizonans from all political ideologies and backgrounds overwhelmingly voted to protect abortion rights in Arizona’s state constitution today, delivering yet another victory for reproductive freedom at the ballot box. The Arizona for Abortion Access campaign, backed by the Fairness Project, won its “Yes on Proposition 139” effort Tuesday night. At the time of the race call at 1:14 ET, the “Yes” votes were leading 62.8% to 37.2%.
“Tonight Arizonans proved the power of voting and ensconced a fundamental freedom to abortion care in the state constitution. This is not just voters sending a message they hope politicians will hear, this is change,” declared Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project, which backed Arizona’s Yes on Prop 139 campaign. “This campaign garnered record-breaking enthusiasm with voters in every part of the state, and we’re so proud to have worked closely with the abortion rights advocates on the ground to protect reproductive freedom for the people of Arizona.”
For Laura Dent, campaign manager of Arizona for Abortion Access, the organization that spearheaded the successful campaign to pass this proposition, tonight’s victory sends a clear message to the governor and legislature. “The people of Arizona were motivated from day one to reclaim our personal freedoms and reject our state’s dangerous abortion ban, and today we did just that,” Dent said. “The critical financial resources and strategic insights from our dedicated partners at the Fairness Project were a key ingredient to successfully securing our constitutional right to reproductive freedom.”
Tonight’s win underscored the vital importance of ballot measures in reaffirming democratic values and reflecting the will of the people. “The Arizonan for Abortion Access campaign overcame attack after frivolous attack from extremist politicians who sought to keep voters from having their say at the ballot box. Time and time again, when American voters are allowed to have their voices heard at the ballot box, they choose to enshrine reproductive freedom” Hall emphasized. “There is no greater antidote to the powerlessness so many Americans felt after the Dobbs decision than to see regular citizens take matters into their own hands, appeal to their fellow voters, and change the law.”
While a watershed moment, this victory in Arizona is by no means a first for the Fairness Project. Since 2022 and the overturn of Roe v Wade, 22 GOP-led state legislatures have enacted severe abortion restrictions or outright bans. To counteract these draconian measures, the Fairness Project began working with state-level partners on the ground to restore and protect reproductive rights with citizen-initiated ballot measures.
With an overall commitment of $30M this election cycle, the Fairness Project is the largest funder of abortion rights ballot campaigns in the U.S. The group has been providing crucial resources, technical expertise, strategic support, and more to campaigns on the ground in multiple states, including Florida, Arizona, Missouri, Nebraska, and Montana.
Having already carried more than 30 progressive ballot measures to victory, the overwhelming majority of which were in conservative and right-leaning states, the Fairness Project is widely considered the nation’s ballot measure leader. Thanks to its unique strategy in reaching Republican, independent, and undecided voters, the organization has been able to continue its electoral success in the 2024 campaign.
