WASHINGTON – Abortion rights advocates announced Friday that they’re deploying money and resources to win Nebraska’s Right to Abortion ballot initiative this November.

Advocates say the Nebraska measure is a “must-win” because it’s the only state in the nation with competing abortion measures on the ballot, one that would expand reproductive freedoms and one that would ban them. Whichever receives the most votes over 50% will prevail.

National ballot measure leader the Fairness Project said today that it’s making a major investment in the campaign’s crucial final weeks to help secure its victory.

“We have an incredible opportunity to expand and protect abortion access in Nebraska,” said Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project and leading ballot campaign strategist. “We have no intention of letting this opportunity pass us by.”

When discussing why the Fairness Project considers the Nebraska measure winnable, Hall noted the outpouring of grassroots support for the ballot measure from all corners of the state, including traditional conservative strongholds.

“More than 200,000 Nebraskans signed petitions in support of the abortion rights ballot measure that would overturn the state’s 12-week ban and enshrine reproductive rights in the state constitution,” said Hall. “We haven’t seen numbers like that before in Nebraska, which tells us that there’s a lot of support and momentum for the ballot measure.”

To get the reproductive health measure on the ballot, campaign organizers successfully collected signatures from at least 5% of registered voters in 38 of the state’s 93 counties, nearly all of which lean conservative and voted for Trump.

“We know reproductive freedom is an issue that resonates with Nebraskans, regardless of their political affiliation,” Hall said. “We’re honored to support this voter-led initiative in the campaign’s final weeks.”

The Fairness Project joins a wide array of organizations supporting the Protect Our Rights campaign in its final stretch. They include Planned Parenthood Advocates of Nebraska, Nebraska Appleseed Action, Women’s Fund of Omaha, ACLU Nebraska, I Be Black Girl, Nebraska Abortion Resources, Nebraska Civic Engagement Table, Second House Collaborative, and more.

The Fairness Project recently announced that it will double its overall investment in abortion rights ballot campaigns this election cycle to $30 million, bringing an infusion of funds to the campaigns it’s supporting in states across the country in these critical final weeks before the election.

The new investment makes Fairness Project, which has already won more than 30 progressive ballot measures in conservative and right-leaning states, one of the largest funders of abortion rights ballot campaigns in the U.S. The group is widely considered the nation’s ballot measure leader.

“We’re committed to putting all of our resources toward making sure the will of the voters prevails,” said Hall. “Abortion rights ballot campaigns can and will win in red states across the country, and we’re doing everything we can to help them get there.”

Before the recent announcement, the Fairness Project had already invested more than $15M in abortion rights ballot measure campaigns this election cycle. The group has been providing crucial resources, technical expertise, strategic support, and more to campaigns on the ground in multiple states.

Since 2022, 22 GOP-led state legislatures have enacted severe restrictions or outright bans on abortion. In response, the Fairness Project has directed its national campaign and fundraising operation to restore and protect reproductive rights with citizen-initiated ballot measures. As of today, abortion rights are undefeated at the ballot box, winning in seven states.
