Washington, DC — The Fairness Project will lead a panel of experts this week at South by Southwest 2024 in Austin, Texas, in a discussion about the power of direct democracy to drive change and progress on issues such as health care, minimum wage, and reproductive rights.

The Fairness Project’s session, “Ballot Measures: How Voters Protect Abortion and Democracy,” will cover how ballot measures allow voters to create real change when politicians are out of touch and have led to major progressive wins in recent years on several key issues for working people. The speakers will also take a look back at the recent slate of progressive ballot measure wins and lessons learned from key victories, particularly in red and purple states, and how this crucial democratic tool has come under attack in response to strong victories for working people.

The Fairness Project’s panel will include:

  • Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project (moderator)

    • Prentiss Haney, Senior Advisor to the Ohio Organizing Collaborative

    • Luz María Henríquez, Executive Director of the ACLU of Missouri

    • Chris Love, Senior Advisor to Arizona for Abortion Access and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona

The Fairness Project has collaborated in the past with these experts in its work to win more than 30 progressive ballot measure campaigns at the state and municipal level since 2016. The panel will be held at SXSW 2024 this Thursday, March 8 at 11:30 am CT.
