Jefferson City, MO — Today, advocates for reproductive freedom announced the launch of a ballot measure campaign, backed by the Fairness Project, to end the extreme abortion ban in Missouri and guarantee that patients can make their own health decisions without interference from politicians.

The campaign, Missourians for Constitutional Freedom, is the latest effort by citizens in Republican-led states to protect their rights using the ballot measure process. The statewide coalition of citizens, organizers, providers, and advocates will work to collect 172,000 signatures from Missourians by May 5 in order to qualify their amendment for this November’s election.

“This is great news for the movement to secure reproductive freedom with ballot measures. 2024 is shaping up to be the most pivotal year for abortion rights on the ballot that we’ve ever seen,” said Kelly Hall, executive director of the Fairness Project. “We are so proud to support this coalition that is fighting to end the cruel abortion ban in Missouri, which denies patients the right to make their own health decisions. This amendment will stop that injustice and ensure that Missourians are trusted to decide what’s right for them and their families. There is a long road to November, and we are ready to fight alongside Missourians for Constitutional Freedom.”

Missourians for Constitutional Freedom is being led by the ACLU of Missouri, Abortion Action Missouri, Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes, and Advocates of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri.

In addition to backing the Missouri campaign, the Fairness Project has made seven-figure investments to support reproductive rights measures in 2024, including more than $3.1 million to the Arizona for Abortion Access campaign as it works to collect nearly 400,000 signatures.

Last year, the Fairness Project supported Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights throughout their effort to pass a constitutional amendment to protect reproductive freedom in Ohio. It also worked in 2022 to support the successful citizen-initiated Michigan Reproductive Freedom for All campaign as well as the legislatively referred measure supported by Vermont for Reproductive Freedom.
