Voters Set to Decide on Abortion Rights, Minimum Wage, and More on Election Day
Washington, DC – Americans in states across the country will vote on ballot measures Tuesday, using direct democracy to exercise their freedom to make decisions that affect their communities and lives. The outcomes of these measures will shape the nation in major ways over the coming years. None is more significant than abortion rights, which is on the ballot in 10 states during this first presidential election since the fall of Roe v Wade.
Widely considered the national ballot measure leader, the Fairness Project is driving funding and strategy for closely-watched campaigns in red and purple states throughout the U.S.
“Some of these races are tight, but we expect to see abortion rights and workers’ rights secure major victories on Election Day,” predicted Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project. “American voters want personal freedoms, higher wages, and healthier families – and ballot measures let them vote those changes into reality themselves.”
In this election cycle, the Fairness Project has emerged as the largest backer of abortion ballot measures nationwide, committing $30M to critical campaigns in Florida, Nebraska, Arizona, Missouri, and Montana. Overall, the organization has won more than 30 progressive ballot measures, primarily in red and conservative-leaning states, to raise wages, stop predatory payday lenders, expand health care access, and more.
**ABORTION RIGHTS BALLOT MEASURE RACES TO WATCH ON ELECTION NIGHT**
Floridians Protecting Freedom (Amendment 4)
The Floridians Protecting Freedom campaign launched the grassroots effort for “Yes on 4 Florida.” This ballot measure would enshrine abortion protections into the state constitution. Florida requires a 60% threshold for passage of amendments to the state constitution.
Protect Our Rights (Nebraska) (Initiative Measures 439 and 434)
Nebraska voters face two competing ballot questions abortion this year: Initiative Measure 439, which would protect the right to abortion through fetal viability; and Initiative Measure 434, which would make the state’s 12-week abortion ban permanent by putting it into the state’s constitution. The Protect Our Rights campaign has raised more than $12 million and is backed by Planned Parenthood, ACLU, The Fairness Project and others – it supports measure 439. Initiative measure 434 – the abortion ban – is bankrolled by U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts, and engaging in some of the most misleading voter confusion tactics seen in any state to-date.
Arizona for Abortion Access (Proposition 139)
The Arizona for Abortion Access campaign collected a record number of petition signatures from more than 1 in 5 registered voters in the state earlier this year. If passed, the proposition will protect abortion rights in the state constitution. Arizona is a critical swing state where the AAA campaign has put government overreach and personal freedoms – including 40 current restrictions on abortion care and attempts to reinstate an outright ban from the 19th century – on the ballot.
Missourians for Constitutional Freedom (Amendment 3)
Missourians for Constitutional Freedom have been fighting to overturn the state’s total abortion ban with their “Yes on 3” effort, and if successful would be the first state ever to overturn a complete ban on abortion.
Montanans Securing Reproductive Rights (Measure 128)
Montanans Securing Reproductive Rights qualified Measure 128 for the ballot by gathering over 117,000 petition signatures. The “Vote Yes on 128” campaign, inspired by the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, aims to protect abortion access in Montana’s constitution.
**WORKERS’ RIGHTS BALLOT MEASURE RACES TO WATCH ON ELECTION NIGHT**
Missourians for Healthy Families and Fair Wages (Proposition A)
The Missourians for Healthy Families and Fair Wages campaign would give all workers mandated sick time and raise the minimum wage. Victory here would result in economic growth and a stronger economy for Missouri by giving a raise to minimum wage earners across the Show-Me State while ensuring that parents no longer need to choose between a paycheck and their family’s health.
Paid Sick Leave For Nebraskans (Initiative Measure 436)
The Paid Sick Leave For Nebraskans campaign would grant all Nebraska workers access to paid sick leave, keeping workers healthy and ensuring they can make ends meet, even when caring for themselves or a sick loved one. In a state in which over a third of full-time workers and over 75 percent of part-time employees lack access to paid sick leave, the measure would be transformative for working families and the state economy.
Better Jobs for Alaska (Issue 1)
The Better Jobs for Alaska campaign would gradually raise the minimum wage to $15 and mandate sick time for all Alaskan workers. It would also ban employers from mandating meetings for religious and political purposes unrelated to work. With one of the highest costs of living in the United States, Alaska’s workers would benefit immensely from the raised minimum wage should the measure pass.
North Dakota Citizens Protecting the Constitution (Measure 2)
North Dakota Citizens Protecting the Constitution is running a “No on Measure 2” campaign. If passed, this anti-democratic measure would strip away North Dakotans’ rights to weigh in on critical issues of public importance and propose changes to state laws and the state constitution through the ballot measure process.
