Richmond, VA – Voters in Virginia today decided to temporarily allow the state legislature to redraw the commonwealth’s congressional districts ahead of the critical 2026 midterms. For the Fairness Project, the country’s leading ballot measure organization and backer of Virginians for Fair Elections, the victory in Virginia is proof positive that American voters are revolted by Trump’s effort to tip the congressional scales and will turn out in special elections to defend their right to fair elections.
“Today, Virginians made it clear that they would not sit idly by and allow the nation’s congressional districts to be warped by politicians who are more concerned with appeasing Donald Trump than uplifting the voices of their own voters,” said Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project. “By approving the legislature’s proposal to rework congressional districts in the commonwealth, voters are once again using ballot measures to assert their will amid partisan games. At the same time, they’re helping to create a fairer national congressional map heading into the midterm elections.”
The Fairness Project, which in 2024 helped propel ballot measure campaigns for reproductive freedom, economic justice, and other progressive priorities to victory, was one of the biggest backers of Virginians for Fair Elections, donating over $12M to the campaign.
“Democracy is on the ballot this year,” said Hall. “Extremist politicians are doing all they can to silence voters, and rigging the maps is one of their favorite tools.” she continued. “But citizens aren’t despairing; instead, they’re getting to work. This is our defining moment when we as citizens unite to stop our country’s antidemocratic backslide,” she concluded. “Today, Virginians led the way.”
