The Fight for Voter-Led Change

Defending Direct Democracy

We’re tracking efforts to weaken direct democracy across the country. And we’re fighting back.

Our democracy is facing a coordinated, under-the-radar attack as state legislatures move to restrict people-powered ballot measures—a tool that has improved millions of lives in recent years. Since the launch of our Ballot Measure Rescue Campaign in 2021, we’ve led a multi-state effort to defend this critical democratic tool using litigation, legislative advocacy, and ballot campaigns to stop anti-democratic laws, challenge them in court when necessary, and win when these fights reach the ballot.

These attacks take many forms—from increasing the number of votes it takes to win ballot measures, to onerous signature collection rules, to allowing for even more political interference by hostile state actors. Individually, these changes are burdensome. Taken together, these attacks paint a dire picture of the state of direct democracy in the United States. The Fairness Project is leading the charge to fight back.
