Public Education & Research

The Fairness Project Education Fund

The Fairness Project Education Fund aims to educate the public about ballot measures as an important facet of American democracy, raise public awareness about proposed changes to ballot measure processes, and make limited investments, to the extent allowable by law, in the incubation and execution of winning ballot measure campaigns.

Our activities include:

  • Press engagement: We educate journalists about the ballot measure landscape, unique state ballot measure processes, and historic context on ballot measure activity to improve journalism around direct democracy; this includes highlighting attacks on ballot measure processes.
  • Public reports & educational materials: We produce and disseminate reports on the ballot measure landscape, how to learn more about specific ballot measures, and the impact of proposed changes to ballot measure processes. These public education resources also include social media collateral, infographics, public briefings and trainings, and presentations at conferences or other public forums.
  • Litigation: Where we identify opportunities to participate in litigation to protect citizen access to ballot measure processes, resources from the Fairness Project Education Fund may be used to advance those lawsuits.
  • Policy & legal research: We support policy and legal research about the ballot measure landscape, potential future opportunities to improve ballot measure processes or debunk myths about direct democracy.

The Fairness Project Education Fund collaborates with our sister organization, the Fairness Project, to effectively engage in both public education (non-lobbying) and direct lobbying activities, within the allowable limits of both types of funding. The Fairness Project Education Fund operates as a project of Hopewell Fund and is eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions that support its initiatives.
